Confronting climate change and livelihood: smallholder farmers’ perceptions and adaptation strategies in northeastern Burundi

Abstract Rain-fed agriculture is the main source of livelihood for most Burundi’s population, especially in northeastern part country. This research aimed at examining how smallholder farmers Northeastern region Burundi perceive climate change and variability identifying methods that are used to adapt, based on data from 200 small actual weather recorded between 1986 2017. We find majority (54%) significant increases temperature unpredictability rainfall duration intensity making adjustments adapt their response changes climate. Over 80% have implemented least one adaptation strategy among nine evaluated. Changing crop varieties, changing fertilizers, planting shade trees strategies were being by across study area. The results a binary regression model showed agricultural education experience farmers, as well farm family size, livestock ownership, information access, credit income, strongly influence farmers’ decisions change. obstacles lack strategies, poverty, which makes it difficult cope with increased costs farming.
